A recent outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus in the U.S. marks the first instance of avian flu infecting bovines. The outbreak is also believed to be the first occurrence of mammal-to-human transmission of the virus, as a dairy worker in Texas presumably contracted it after contact with cattle.

Que. zoo observes surprising animal behaviour during solar eclipse

Granby Zoo in Estrie, Que., recently seized the opportunity presented by the April 8 solar eclipse to conduct a study on animal behaviour. Partnering with the Universite du Quebec a Montreal, the zoo’s research and conservation department observed and documented the activities of various animals during the rare event.

Orca calf trapped in B.C. lagoon outwits rescuers

Despite multiple rescue attempts, a two-year-old orca calf stranded in a remote 3-km (1.8-mi) lagoon in British Columbia has proved elusive to capture. The whale—who the Ehattesaht First Nation has named kʷiisaḥiʔis, meaning “Brave Little Hunter”—has been alone in the lagoon for approximately three weeks, ever since her pregnant mother died on March 23.

Seven beagles officially retire from P.E.I.’s Atlantic Veterinary College

For seven happy pooches in P.E.I., retirement means an end to poking and prodding from eager veterinary students and a start to sunbathing on lawns, playing fetch, and cuddling with their humans. Now that Atlantic Veterinary College has decided to move away from teaching dogs and instead use models, virtual reality, and client-owned dogs for student practice, the beagles in their faculty are ready for adoption.
