The Humane Society London & Middlesex (HSLM) in London, Ont., has achieved a significant milestone by opening its first accredited on-site veterinary clinic, the HSLM Animal Medical Centre. This development marks a transformative moment in the organization’s 126-year history, allowing for direct, on-site veterinary care for animals in their shelter.

Previously, HSLM relied on transporting animals to external veterinary partners for medical services, which often added stress to the animals and logistical challenges for the staff. With the new clinic, led by Medical Director Tracy Vink-Taylor, DVM, animals will receive timely and consistent care, improving their overall well-being and reducing their length of stay in the shelter.

The clinic is equipped with advanced medical resources, including:

● A full IDEXX in-house laboratory suite for real-time diagnostics
● Digital Radiography (DR X-ray) for advanced imaging
● Two fully equipped surgical suites for both routine and urgent procedures
● A dedicated dental suite with digital dental radiology to support comprehensive oral health care

At this time, the HSLM Animal Medical Centre exclusively serves animals currently in the care of the shelter. While recognizing the growing need for accessible veterinary services in the community, HSLM plans to evaluate community needs and operational capacity over the next several years to potentially offer public services as part of a long-term, phased strategy.
