Runaway kangaroo sends zoo officials, police on wild chase

Kangaroo caught east of Toronto

Kangaroo caught by law enforcement.

The recent sighting of a female kangaroo hopping down roadways befuddled Oshawa, Ont., locals. The fugitive marsupial began a mad dash away from Durham Regional Police after jumping over the heads of its handlers during a transport rest stop at the Oshawa Zoo and Fun Farm.

The daring escape resulted in a five-day search led by Oshawa Zoo officials, Durham police officers, and a local lost pet search group. The animal’s immense speed, and its ability to remain camouflaged in the brown landscape of Ontario’s early-winter season, allowed it to outsmart and outrun the search party. Further, as kangaroos are not food-motivated, laying food traps or snacks was not a possibility.

The kangaroo was eventually caught by law enforcement, who crept up on her as she stopped to take a break and grabbed her by the tail. While the kangaroo was brought back to the zoo completely unharmed, the same could not be said for the officer whose face she reportedly bopped during capture.

Videos of the rogue marsupial roaming through Oshawa also made their rounds on social media.
