Rallying for Nellie: Community rushes to save endangered pony
With costs reaching $15,000 for transport and treatment, owner Sandra Piercey has launched a fundraising campaign
A Newfoundland pony at Devoe Ranch in Grand Codroy River, Nfld., is facing a life-threatening condition that requires immediate surgery. Nellie, one of the ranch’s registered Newfoundland ponies, was diagnosed with guttural pouch mycosis, a rare disease that has caused her to bleed multiple times. Without surgery, Nellie could bleed out, putting her life at serious risk.
The necessary surgery is not available on the island, requiring Nellie to be transported to the Atlantic Veterinary College in PEI. However, the cost of vet bills and transport totals $15,000, an amount the ranch cannot afford. In an effort to save Nellie, farm owner Sandra Piercey has launched a fundraising campaign, with the hope of raising enough money to cover the expenses.
“We could lose her without this surgery,” Piercey said in conversation with The Hamilton Spectator. “She’s just like a walking time bomb right now.”
