Province invests $9 million in UCVM diagnostics lab
The funding will help UCVM's Diagnostic Services Unit continue its vital work in safeguarding animal health, food safety, and public health
The Government of Alberta is investing $9 million over three years in the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine’s (UCVM) Diagnostic Services Unit (DSU)—the only laboratory in the province providing routine in-province livestock diagnostics.
This funding, made possible through strong support from the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) and the livestock industry, will help the DSU continue its vital work in safeguarding animal health, food safety, and public health. By offering services such as necropsy, histopathology, bacteriology, serology, parasitology, and molecular diagnostics, the lab plays a key role in protecting against animal diseases that threaten market access, consumer confidence, and the economic stability of rural communities.
“We could not be more excited or grateful for the investment. This investment will allow the DSU to increase its support to meet the growing needs of Alberta veterinarians. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of diagnostic services to protect our livestock industry and, by extension, rural communities and the economy,” says DSU director Dr. Jennifer Davies.
