The Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) has launched a new weight care program for pets, aimed at addressing the growing issue of obesity among dogs and cats. Sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition, the program offers a comprehensive approach to help pets achieve and maintain a healthy weight, ultimately improving their quality of life.
OVC’s new initiative seeks to provide proactive solutions to help pet owners and veterinary professionals manage this issue effectively. “Our team is passionate about improving the lives of pets, and weight management is critical to that goal,” says Dr. Adronie Verbrugghe, associate professor of canine and feline clinical nutrition at OVC’s Department of Clinical Studies. “With generous sponsorship from Hill’s, we can now offer a unique program in Canada that leverages technology, tailored nutrition plans, physical therapy, and ongoing support to keep pets on track.”
The program features a variety of services, including in-person or virtual consultations, personalized weight care plans, body composition assessments using advanced imaging technology, and optional physical rehabilitation. It also emphasizes regular progress tracking and provides educational resources for pet guardians to create healthier lifestyles at home.
A notable aspect of the program is its integration into the educational experience at OVC, offering veterinary students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in weight management practices.
The team behind the program includes veterinary nutrition experts, rehabilitation specialists, and new members supported by Hill’s, such as Shoshana Verton-Shaw, RVT, VTS (Nutrition), and Zahra Rahimi, DVM, PhD, Hill’s Pet Nutrition Veterinary Intern. Together, they aim to provide comprehensive and tailored care for each pet.
The Hill’s Pet Nutrition Weight Care Program is now accepting referrals for feline and canine patients from across Ontario. More information about the program is available on OVC’s website.
