“Unexpected and unbudgeted” is how the Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) describes a recent incident in their team.

The OHS is calling for urgent community support to recoup the cost of a dental equipment after Boris, a homeless hound that was under their care, broke it during a routine procedure. As the dog was under anesthesia, a poorly timed twitch damaged a sensor in the imaging equipment that was used.

“With our equipment broken, we’re facing major delays in providing dental care for the animals,” says, Dr. Mary Thompson, OHS veterinarian. “This also means that animals are going to be staying in our care for longer and our resources will be stretched even further.”

While under anesthesia, Boris twitched and got into a pricey accident–it broke the sensor of the dental equipment used on him, which was purchased by the OHS 14 years ago for $10,000. Photo courtesy OHS

The OHS originally purchased the equipment 14 years ago for $10,000, and the current cost of replacing it is expected to be considerably higher.
