October is National Vet Tech Month
Registered veterinary technicians and technologists are an essential part of the animal health-care community
Registered veterinary technicians and technologists (RVTs) are an essential part of the animal health-care community, which is why October has been designated National Vet Tech Month.
“RVTs are integral members of the veterinary team, but they aren’t only found in veterinary clinics,” said Shannon Brownrigg, executive director of the Registered Veterinary Technologists and Technicians of Canada (RVTTC).
“RVTs are formally educated and have genuine passion for animal health and welfare. [Working as an RVT] is a diverse and exciting career with so many opportunities just waiting to be explored.”
National Vet Tech Month is a collaboration between the Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT), RVTTC, and the provincial RVT associations. It aims to promote, celebrate, and recognize RVTs across Canada. This year’s RVT Month theme celebrates the roles and possibilities that exist within the RVT career and the many ‘hats’ an RVT wears every day.
In the past, RVTs have been recognized during “National Veterinary Technician Week” in the United States, which typically takes place the third week of October.
RVT Month kits are available for workplaces to celebrate their RVT team members and educate colleagues and the public on the role they play in a practice and the contribution they make to animal health.
RVTTC is encouraging veterinary teams to use the kit materials to launch their own activities and post on social media with the hashtags #HugAnRVT, #RVTMonth, and #oneweekjustwasntenough.
