Santa’s reindeer ready for lift-off after annual health check at AVC
AVC’s Large Animal Medicine Service performed a thorough examination of Santa’s reindeer
The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island confirmed all nine of Santa’s reindeer have passed their annual health check-up and are in top condition to assist Santa on Christmas Eve.
“Our veterinary team is always thrilled to contribute to this magical tradition,” said AVC dean Dr. Dominique Griffon. “Santa’s team covers an extraordinary distance in one night, so a clean bill of health is absolutely essential.”
On December 14, AVC’s Large Animal Medicine Service performed a thorough examination of Santa’s reindeer. The team focused on assessing their cardiovascular systems, respiratory function, and muscle strength to ensure they were physically prepared for the long journey ahead. Additional tests for any signs of illness or fatigue confirmed that each reindeer was in excellent condition.
As part of the extensive check-up, AVC specialists also paid particular attention to the lead reindeer’s iconic glowing nose, ensuring it was fully operational for guiding Santa’s sleigh through the night sky.
“These reindeer are truly remarkable athletes,” said Dr. Griffon. “We also made sure their vaccines were updated to protect against any seasonal illnesses. They’re not just ready to fly—they’re in peak condition to deliver joy to children everywhere.”
In addition to their medical assessments, the reindeer were treated to extra care from the AVC team. Their fur was groomed, and their antlers and hooves were polished, ensuring they were looking their best for the special night.
