The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) is inviting applications for its 2026 Implementing Refinement Grant, which supports efforts to improve the welfare of animals used in research.

The grant is designed to fund projects that go beyond the basic care institutions are expected to provide. AWI is seeking proposals that introduce meaningful refinements to animals’ living conditions, care, or experiences while they are involved in research.

Grants of up to US$8,000 will be offered to support the implementation of a refinement—equipment purchases or staff training—that will improve the welfare of animals used in research.

Applications are open to residents of Canada and the United States, and projects must be conducted in either country. Animal care staff, veterinarians, students, and researchers are eligible to apply. The application deadline is October 11 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Applicants must use AWI’s online application system and provide a detailed project proposal, proposed budget, curriculum vitae or resumé, and letter of support from their host institution.

The program does not cover basic husbandry or medical care that an institution should provide as part of its regular responsibilities. Proposals involving nontraditional research settings must provide additional justification for funding.

AWI uses an independent review process to assess applications. Projects that rank highest form the basis of AWI’s final selection. For more information about the grant or application process, contact implementationgrant@awionline.org.
