Closing the veterinary care gap for farm animals is the driving force behind mobile app celebrated at the recent Canada’s Outdoor Farm Show.

Oxford County, Ont.-based veterinary telemedicine company VETSon received the event’s Innovation in Livestock Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to the agricultural sector with an emphasis on pioneering solutions that improve the efficiency and work-life balance of large animal veterinarians.

Launched in late 2022, the telemedicine platform allows farmers to connect with their veterinarian via video visits, allowing for real-time assessments and wellness checks. The technology is intended to serve small farms with cattle, pigs, horses, sheep, goats, alpacas, llamas, and farm pets.

The app, which addresses Canada’s shortage of large animal veterinarians, allows practitioners to serve more clients daily, while simultaneously provides farms with more rapid access to service.

“This recognition underscores our commitment to pushing the boundaries of telemedicine innovation in large animal veterinary practice,” says VETSon’s chief veterinary officer, Glen Yates, DVM. “[We] believe telemedicine can improve the bottom line for veterinarians and farmers alike, while making sure veterinary service can be accessible in a global market where veterinarians are increasingly in short supply.”

Currently, there are 120 farms across Canada using VETSon, reports CBC News.
