Western provinces renew veterinary education partnership with the University of Saskatchewan

Three Canadian provinces—Saskatchewan, British Columbia, and Manitoba—have reaffirmed their support for veterinary education and research in Western Canada by renewing a longstanding funding agreement with the University of Saskatchewan’s Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM).
The renewed interprovincial agreement, which extends through 2030, allocates more than $194 million over five years to the college. This funding will support the WCVM’s educational programs, clinical services, and research initiatives, which play a central role in addressing regional needs in animal health and public safety.
Established over 60 years ago, the agreement represents a cooperative approach among the provinces to ensure access to veterinary training and expertise. The WCVM remains the primary institution serving veterinary students and professionals in the region. Its facilities include a veterinary hospital, diagnostic laboratory, and research centres that contribute to a range of sectors—from livestock and aquaculture to companion animals and public health.
“We are proud of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and the exceptional education opportunities it provides to veterinary students from across Western Canada,” said Ken Cheveldayoff, Saskatchewan Advanced Education Minister. “We are grateful to have this internationally recognized college right here in Saskatchewan and are fully confident in USask’s ability to produce highly skilled veterinarians to care for both our livestock and companion animals.”
The renewed funding underscores the continuing importance of veterinary infrastructure in supporting agriculture, food safety, and animal welfare in Western Canada.
