Veterinarian appointed to the Order of Canada

Carlton Gyles, DVM, MSc, PhD, is renowned for his research on how E. coli causes disease in both animals and humans

Veterinary pathologist Carlton Gyles, DVM, MSc, PhD, has been appointed to the Order of Canada for his contributions to veterinary medicine. Gyles, a professor at the University of Guelph, is renowned for his research on how E. coli causes disease in both animals and humans. The university considers him one of the world’s leading authorities on the topic.

Beyond his research, Dr. Gyles is also celebrated for his advocacy for science and his leadership roles. He continues to influence the field through his work with the Canadian Research Network on Bacterial Diseases of Swine and the Canadian Research Institute for Food Safety. In 2021, he received the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association’s President’s Award for his exceptional contributions to veterinary medicine.

A graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) in 1964, Dr. Gyles earned a PhD in the UK and Denmark before joining the OVC faculty in 1969. He served for 36 years as a teacher and researcher, and in leadership roles, including chair, dean of graduate students, and interim dean.
