Value of veterinarians highlighted in recent survey
Learn more about insights into pet ownership and access to veterinary care in Canada as revealed in the 2024 Canadian Pet Population Survey.
The 2024 Canadian Pet Population Survey, conducted by research firm Léger, sheds light on pet ownership trends and underscores the essential role of veterinary care in safeguarding pet health across the country. According to the report, Canada is home to approximately 7.2 million dogs and 8.2 million cats, with pets present in more than half of Canadian households.
The survey found dogs typically visited a veterinarian twice yearly, while cats averaged one annual visit. These appointments were primarily for routine care, including vaccinations and wellness checks. Veterinarians were also identified as the most trusted source for pet health information, with Canadians citing their expertise and compassion as key reasons for their confidence.
“Veterinarians play a critical role in ensuring pet health,” says Catherine Filejski, CEO of the Canadian Animal Health Institute. “That’s why it’s crucial that we continue to work on improving access to both veterinary care and veterinary medicines in Canada, so Canadian pets can live long, health lives.”
The data reinforces the strong bond between Canadians and their companion animals and highlights the growing demand for accessible veterinary services. Nearly half of all dogs and one-third of cats in Canada experienced health issues in the past year, emphasizing the importance of regular veterinary attention.
“The 2024 Canadian Pet Population Survey provides valuable insights into the evolving relationship between Canadians and their pets,” says Stephanie Lander, associate vice-president of Leger Healthcare. “Understanding pet ownership trends is essential for addressing the needs of both pet owners and veterinary professionals. This research not only offers a comprehensive snapshot of Canada’s pet population but also sheds light on emerging challenges and opportunities in pet healthcare, reinforcing the critical role of veterinarians and guiding industry decisions.”
