University extends appointment of veterinary medicine dean

The University of Calgary has renewed Dr. Renate Weller’s appointment as dean of the faculty of veterinary medicine (UCVM) for a second term, extending her leadership through Dec. 31, 2032.
Weller has served as dean since September 2021. During her tenure, UCVM has expanded its capacity to meet the growing needs of Alberta’s veterinary community, including the opening of the Veterinary Learning Commons in September 2025. The facility, supported by a $68.5-million investment from the provincial government, is designed to double annual doctor of veterinary medicine enrolments and address the shortage of livestock and rural veterinarians in the province.
Under Weller’s leadership, UCVM also launched the diagnostic services unit, which provides affordable in-province veterinary expertise and timely diagnoses to improve animal health and welfare, protect public health, and ensure food safety.
In 2023, Weller accepted Alberta’s Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal on behalf of UCVM and members of the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association council for contributions to increasing the number of veterinarians in the province and supporting food safety and zoonotic disease prevention.
Weller brings extensive experience in veterinary education and clinical practice. Before joining UCVM, she served as director of veterinary education at CVS Group plc in Europe and held academic roles at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London. She earned her doctor of veterinary medicine from Ludwig Maxmilians University in Germany, and her MSc, PhD and postgraduate certificate in academic practice from institutions in the U.K.
The renewal follows a review by an advisory committee that included representatives from faculty, staff, students, and the community.
