Toronto waives adoption fees for large dogs
Larger breeds such as German Shepherds and Huskies typically spend 1.5 times longer in shelters compared to smaller dogs
In a bid to help more large dogs find their forever homes, the City of Toronto is waiving adoption fees for dogs weighing more than 50 lb (22.67 kg), as well as for big-pawed puppies expected to exceed that weight. The initiative aims to reduce the extended shelter stays for larger breeds such as German Shepherds and Huskies, as they typically spend 1.5 times longer in shelters compared to smaller dogs.
“Typically in shelters, what happens is everybody always wants a small dog. People love small dogs and people love puppies and we almost don’t even have to post those when we get them in because they get adopted so quickly,” said Elana Trainoff, the manager of partnerships and animal services with the City of Toronto, in conversation with CBC News.
The fee-waiver initiative runs until December 20. For more information visit the city’s pet adoption website.
