BC SPCA urges carbon monoxide safety

This Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, remind clients about the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning and its impact on pets. In collaboration with Technical Safety BC, the BC SPCA raises awareness of this often-overlooked risk, especially as the colder months prompt increased use of gas-powered heating systems. Pets often spend more time indoors than their owners and can be more vulnerable to carbon monoxide exposure.

Two black bears killed following events at B.C. music festival

B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) reports two black bears were euthanized after repeated disturbances at the Shambhala Music Festival in Salmo, B.C. Having observed that the bears demonstrated highly food-conditioned behaviour and displayed little fear of humans, BCCOS deemed the bears too dangerous for further relocation or rehabilitation.

B.C. on high alert for chronic wasting disease

The government of British Columbia has implemented preventative measures following the recent discovery of two deer infected with chronic wasting disease in the province’s Kootenays region. The rare and fatal degenerative brain disorder attacks the nervous system of animals such as deer, elk, and moose.

Presence of whirling disease confirmed in closed B.C. lakes

January 30, 2024

Last September, a suspected case of whirling disease prompted Parks Canada to shut down several lakes in Yoho National Park, B.C., including Emerald Lake. The agency recently confirmed the presence of the disease in Emerald Lake, with further spread observed in the Kootenay River watershed.
