Ostrich farm proposes novel research opportunity amid avian flu cull

Universal Ostrich Farms Inc., an ostrich farm in Edgewood, B.C., is fighting to save its herd of 400 birds after a federal avian flu cull order. The farm hopes to use the outbreak to research the disease and develop solutions that could benefit both ostriches and other bird species.

Pet food recalled in B.C. after cat dies from bird flu

Northwest Naturals, an Oregon-based pet food company, is recalling its 2 lb. (0.9 kg) Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food after a cat in Oregon died from H5N1 avian influenza linked to the product. The recalled food was sold in British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, and California.

P.E.I. on alert for avian influenza

In light of recurrent avian flu cases on P.E.I, residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings of sick or dying birds and animals. The H5N1 virus subtype was first noted in P.E.I in March 2022, when a bald eagle found on the Island’s North Shore tested as positive for the disease. By May 2022, cases were confirmed in 23 birds and four fox kits had preliminary positive tests for avian flu.

Canadian milk tests negative for avian influenza

May 16, 2024

In response to growing concerns about the potential spread of thee highly pathogenic H5N1 virus following its detection in U.S. dairy cattle, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have undertaken testing measures to ensure the safety of commercially sold milk. CFIA have confirmed, as of May 14, samples of retail milk across Canada show “no evidence” of the virus.
