Recovery Tails Society, a non-profit organization that temporarily cares for pets while their owners are in mental health and substance use treatment, was launched in January 2026.

Founded by best friends Priya Sharma and Kayleigh Busch, the non-profit offers free, short-term pet care across Vancouver Island, B.C., allowing pet owners to focus on their recovery while their pets are cared for in loving foster homes.

“We saw people decline treatment because pet care fell through,” Sharma told Victoria News. “And for so many people, pets are family.”

Both Sharma and Busch have over 10 years of combined experience in outreach, intake, and treatment coordination. The two met while working in the field of mental health and substance use recovery in Victoria, B.C.

Recovery Tails conducts intake assessments to match pets with suitable foster families when they receive inquiries from individuals or support workers, often accommodating short notice.

The non-profit covers all related expenses, including veterinary care, and maintains weekly check-ins with volunteers.

The community response has been positive, with many volunteers stepping forward to help.
