Petplan, a pet insurance company, has announced the "Practice of the Year" winner from their 2017 Veterinary Awards contest. The winner is Veterinary Specialty & Emergency Center (VSEC) of Levittown and Philadelphia, Pa., a BluePearl Veterinary Partners.

British Columbia forbids cosmetic tail procedures

The College of Veterinarians of British Columbia has voted overwhelmingly to ban cosmetic tail docking of dogs, horses and cattle. The Vancouver-based licensing body declared cosmetic ear cropping of dogs to be unethical about a year ago.

Texas Tech, UA plans uncertain

Texas Tech University has halted—at least temporarily—its proposal to establish a college of veterinary medicine. One year after unveiling an initiative to open a school in Amarillo, the Texas Tech University System in early December “placed the veterinary school on pause,” in the words of spokesman Brett Ashworth.

Vet school applications on the rise in 2016

Nearly 400 more college undergraduates—about a 6 percent increase—applied to veterinary schools in 2016 compared with the year before, according to the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.
