Fledgling season begins, experts warn against intervention

With the arrival of fledgling season, animal rescue organizations often find themselves inundated with calls about odd-looking birds stumbling around on the ground as though drunk. Most wild birds experience an awkward fledgling stage. During this crucial period, they venture out of the nest and spend time on the ground honing essential survival skills such as flying and foraging.

P.E.I. on alert for avian influenza

In light of recurrent avian flu cases on P.E.I, residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings of sick or dying birds and animals. The H5N1 virus subtype was first noted in P.E.I in March 2022, when a bald eagle found on the Island’s North Shore tested as positive for the disease. By May 2022, cases were confirmed in 23 birds and four fox kits had preliminary positive tests for avian flu.

In response to a Professional Bull Riders (PBR) event scheduled for Saturday, June 1, in London, Ont., national animal law organization Animal Justice has formally informed the city’s law enforcement and animal welfare services about potential animal cruelty violations—citing breaches of the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act (PAWS Act).

U.S. revises dog travel requirements

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have released new regulations for all dogs, including service dogs, arriving in the U.S., including those travelling from Canada. As of Aug. 1, Canadian travellers crossing the border with their dogs must complete a CDC dog important form and ensure their furry companions are older than six months and microchipped.

Canadian milk tests negative for avian influenza

In response to growing concerns about the potential spread of thee highly pathogenic H5N1 virus following its detection in U.S. dairy cattle, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) have undertaken testing measures to ensure the safety of commercially sold milk. CFIA have confirmed, as of May 14, samples of retail milk across Canada show “no evidence” of the virus.

Deceased beluga whale found on P.E.I beach

The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), Marine Animal Response Society (MARS), Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Parks Canada have partnered to conduct an examination on the remains of a beluga whale discovered on P.E.I’s Tracadie Beach. The investigation seeks to ascertain cause of death and will include a necropsy and genetic testing.
