Twelve horses dead, N.B. woman receives lifetime animal ownership ban

Following a case of severe animal cruelty involving the deaths of 12 horses, N.B. resident Charlotte Bright has been issued a lifetime ban on owning animals and has been ordered to pay nearly $8,000 in restitution. As she had pleaded guilty to three animal welfare charges under the Criminal Code of Canada, Bright's prohibition from owning animals will be enforceable nationwide.

World Animal Protection Canada to build new database

Animal welfare organization World Animal Protection Canada is taking proactive steps to highlight the persistent issue of exotic animal escapes and attacks across the country. While some incidents—such as Darwin the IKEA monkey, a Japanese macaque who was found wandering a Toronto IKEA wearing a shearling coat and diaper—have captured public attention, many more escapes go unnoticed. To raise awareness of the critical issue of exotic animal captivity, World Animal Protection Canada is developing a comprehensive database and interactive map to document known incidents.

CVMA hires new mental health expert

In a step towards prioritizing the mental health and overall well-being of veterinarians across the country, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) has welcomed Kathy Keil, DVM, as its first Director, Veterinary Wellness, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). With nearly three decades of experience under her belt, Keil will play a key role in advancing the CVMA’s objectives to support the veterinary profession in addressing mental health and wellness issues, while also contributing to DEI initiatives.

Atlantic Veterinary College suspends horse care program, citing limited resources

Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC), located in Charlottetown, P.E.I, has recently terminated their longstanding agreement with the New Brunswick government to ensure specialized care for the province’s equine population. Under the program, AVC veterinarians visited the province to provide essential veterinary services to horses in the province. Now, without the support of out-of-province veterinarians, the veterinary shortage is all the more apparent to New Brunswick horse owners.

Zebras relocated to New Brunswick following turf war

Two zebras from the Forestry Farm Park and Zoo in Saskatoon, Sask. have been transferred to the Magnetic Hill Zoo in Moncton, N.B. Koffee, a gelding, and LeeLoo, a female, became a bonded pair after being separated from their herd last fall due to a medical issue. Citing concerns about territorial behaviour among the other male zebras in the Saskatoon Zoo’s herd of five, the zoo decided against reintroducing them to the herd.
