AVMA names Alberta’s vet of the year

The award honours veterinarians who demonstrate exceptional dedication to animal care and their communities

Dr. Melissa Wallace, lead veterinarian at Coaldale Pet Clinic, has been recognized as Alberta’s “2024 Vet of the Year” by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). The award honours veterinarians who demonstrate exceptional dedication to animal care and their communities.

As per Lethbridge News Now, Dr. Wallace has been serving the Coaldale community since 2006. Her interest in veterinary medicine began in Southern Ontario at the age of 12 after witnessing a C-section performed on a cow. Inspired by the experience, she pursued a veterinary degree at the University of Guelph before moving west to work in livestock veterinary services and eventually joining the Coaldale clinic.

In addition to her clinical work, Wallace became the first Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarian in the Lethbridge area in October 2023. This certification allows her to provide specialized care that enhances the quality of life for elderly pets in the region.

Beyond her veterinary practice, Wallace values the long-term relationships she has built with both pet owners and their animals, emphasizing that community connections are a key part of what makes her work so meaningful.
