Saskatoon vet recognized as bovine veterinarian of the year

Dr. Murray Jelinski of Saskatoon, Sask., has been named the 2026 Veterinarian of the Year by the Western Canadian Association of Bovine Practitioners, recognizing his decades of research, mentorship, and leadership in advancing cattle health and veterinary practice across Western Canada.

Murray Jelinski, DVM, MsC, of Saskatoon, Sask., has been named the 2026 Veterinarian of the Year by the Western Canadian Association of Bovine Practitioners (WCABP) in partnership with Boehringer Ingelheim Canada, recognizing his contributions to bovine health, veterinary research, and professional leadership across Western Canada.

The award, presented at the WCABP annual conference in Calgary last January, honors veterinarians who demonstrate leadership in advancing cattle health and a sustained commitment to the veterinary profession and beef industry. Dr. Jelinski currently serves as Chair in Beef Cattle Health and Production Medicine at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM)

His research portfolio spans key areas in cattle health. Among his most notable contributions is his work on Mycoplasma bovis in feedlot cattle, which has improved understanding of the pathogen and informed diagnostic and management strategies.

With approximately 100 peer-reviewed publications, Jelinski’s research is widely cited and continues to shape evidence-based veterinary care. In addition to his scientific work, he has played a significant role within the WCABP for more than 20 years, including serving as Secretary-Treasurer, and is recognized for mentoring veterinary students and early-career researchers.
