Six holiday hazards every pet owner should know

As holiday celebrations approach, pet owners should watch for seasonal hazards that can harm cats and dogs. The BC SPCA warns that decorations and festive foods pose serious risks. One cat recently needed emergency surgery after swallowing tinsel, which caused an intestinal blockage.
1) Tinsel, ribbons, and string
These items can look like toys but may cause intestinal blockages if swallowed. Keep them out of reach.
2) Electrical cords and lights
Pets may chew on cords, risking injury. Secure cords and unplug lights when not in use.
3) Holiday plants
Mistletoe, holly, lilies, and amaryllis are toxic, especially to cats. Avoid these plants or keep them well out of reach.
4) Festive foods
Chocolate, poultry bones, yeast dough, onions, raisins, and alcohol can be dangerous. Keep food and garbage inaccessible.
5) Christmas trees
Trees can attract curious pets. Make sure they are stable and avoid chemicals in tree water, which pets may drink.
6) Holiday gatherings
Guests and noise can stress animals. Provide a quiet space and monitor doors to prevent escapes.
