A stray labradoodle found in West Kelowna earlier this month is receiving extensive medical care after being rescued in severe condition, according to the BC SPCA.

On Dec. 9, residents reported a large dog running loose near Old Okanagan Highway and Grizzly Road. The Regional District of Central Okanagan’s dog control officers captured the animal and contacted the BC SPCA, concerned about its health.

The dog, now named Shaggy for his matted and overgrown fur, is estimated to be about four years old. He was suffering from multiple infections and had little experience with human interaction, said Shannon Paille, centre manager at BC SPCA Kelowna.

“He seemingly hasn’t been around people much,” Paille said. “He has no idea how to sit and he kept jumping up on me to say hi. Usually when animals come in, they’ve at least had some form of human interaction, but Shaggy acts like he’s seeing people for the first time.”

Veterinarians sedated Shaggy to examine him. His fur was packed with feces and debris, and once shaved, his skin was found to be inflamed and crawling with fleas. His nails were so overgrown they had begun to break, causing pain when walking.

Shaggy is also battling chronic skin and ear infections, a yeast infection, possible urinary tract and eye infections, and an enlarged prostate. He has a perineal hernia that will require surgery. While undergoing surgery, he will be neutered, making him available for adoption.

The BC SPCA reports that Shaggy is receiving medicated baths, ear drops, and antibiotics; however, his surgery will require additional funding. Animal care through the BC SPCA is funded by donations, and Petsecure Pet Health Insurance has pledged to match medical donations up to $3,000.

Donations for Shaggy’s care can be made online.
