Specialty pet retailer exceeds $4.3 million in donations through Companions for Change program
Canadian animal shelters and Dog Guides benefit from donations

Pet Valu says its Companions for Change program has raised more than $4.3 million in monetary and product donations so far this year to support Canadian animal organizations.
The specialty pet retailer announced the milestone on Dec. 4, noting that the funds will go toward emergency relief, capital projects, Dog Guides programs, and community animal shelters across the country.
Tanbir Grover, Pet Valu’s chief marketing and digital officer, said the company is “very grateful” to customers, franchisees, store teams and vendors for helping surpass last year’s record-breaking results. Since its launch in 2010, the program has collected nearly $37 million, all distributed to Canadian animal rescues, shelters, and charities.
This year, the program provided emergency donations of pet essentials such as food, litter, and crates to organizations assisting animals displaced by wildfires and floods. Recipients included Animal Food Bank, Canadian Disaster Animal Response Team, Steinbach Animal Rescue and the Ontario SPCA. The Niagara SPCA also received support to manage an unexpected surge in cat intake.
Pet Valu committed more than $450,000 in sponsorships for major projects in 2025, including funding three mobile units: a veterinary clinic for Coastal Animal Rescue & Education Network Society on Vancouver Island, a transport bus for Just Four Paws Rescue Society in British Columbia and a transport van for Restigouche County SPCA in New Brunswick.
The retailer continued its long-standing support of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, sponsoring the annual Pet Valu Walk for Dog Guides and providing food for about 200 puppies and dogs in training. It also sponsored more than 20 additional Dog Guides teams this year.
Grover said Pet Valu’s stores work closely with local rescues to help find homes for pets through adoption events. Since 2010, the company has helped place more than 53,000 animals, including over 1,500 this year.
Donations come from initiatives such as Pet Appreciation Month in June and Companions for Change month in October. Pet Appreciation Month raised over $2.3 million in 2025, its highest total to date. Customers can also contribute during the holiday season by picking up a “give-what-you-can” calendar at Pet Valu stores outside Quebec, with proceeds going to the program.
