Legislative milestone for RVTs in Ontario

The Veterinary Professionals Act is paving the way for greater recognition and autonomy in Ontario’s veterinary field. Work continues to bring the legislative milestone into force.
Registered Veterinary Technicians (RVTs) will receive formal recognition for their expertise and dedication due to expanded title protection.
Additionally, the new Authorized Activities model will enhance RVTs’ professional autonomy, allowing them to take on more responsibilities within their practice.
The Transition Council of the College of Veterinary Professionals of Ontario is currently shaping the regulations that will govern veterinary medicine in the province. Initially, the Transition Council considered options that would allow RVTs to provide care independently outside of accredited facilities, under specific conditions. However, some of these proposed pathways were later withdrawn due to concerns about oversight.
Looking ahead, draft regulations are expected to be released for public consultation in early 2026. The Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians (OAVT) will keep members informed and encourage participation.
This reform represents a significant advancement for RVTs and the animals they care for.
