Pet food recalled in B.C. after cat dies from bird flu

The U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that the infected cat, an indoor-only pet, was exposed to H5N1 after eating the recalled food

Northwest Naturals, an Oregon-based pet food company, is recalling its 2 lb. (0.9 kg) Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food after a cat in Oregon died from H5N1 avian influenza linked to the product. The recalled food was sold in British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, and California, with best-before dates between May 21, 2026, and June 23, 2026.

As per CBC News, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that the infected cat, an indoor-only pet, was exposed to H5N1 after eating the recalled food. Oregon Department of Agriculture veterinarian Ryan Scholz stated, “We are confident that this cat contracted H5N1 by eating the Northwest Naturals raw and frozen pet food.”

The World Health Organization calling for heightened surveillance of animal populations susceptible to H5N1. While no human cases have been linked to the pet food, Health Canada is advising anyone with the recalled product to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The agency also cautioned against feeding pets raw meat, especially from poultry or game birds.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation, with some additional reports of sick cats, though no further infections have been confirmed. H5N1 remains primarily a bird virus, but recent cases in mammals, including cattle and pigs, have raised concerns. Human infections are rare, but the virus can cause severe illness, including pneumonia or organ failure.
