Two zebras from the Forestry Farm Park and Zoo in Saskatoon, Sask., have been transferred to the Magnetic Hill Zoo in Moncton, N.B. Koffee, a gelding, and LeeLoo, a female, became a bonded pair after being separated from their herd last fall due to a medical issue. Citing concerns about territorial behaviour among the other male zebras in the Saskatoon Zoo’s herd of five, the zoo decided against reintroducing them to the herd.

As per CBC News, the three other zebras in the herd—Marty, Misty, and Shadow—will remain at the Saskatoon facility. The provincial government of Saskatchewan had previously committed $120,000 to support the care and maintenance of all five zebras in the summer of 2023, when the animals had been seized by provincial conservation officers and relocated.

In a news release, zoo manager Jeff Mitchell said, “Zebra males can become very territorial, especially within a herd setting. While we are sad to see Koffee and LeeLoo go, we are confident that relocating them to another [Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums]-accredited facility is the best outcome for the zebras.”
