Veterinary visionary honoured for lifetime of educational excellence

At the 2025 World Veterinary Association (WVA) Global Veterinary Awards in Washington, D.C., retired professor Susan W. Mbugua, DVM, was named Veterinarian of the Year—the WVA’s highest accolade. The recognition comes as part of a dual win, with Dr. Mbugua also earning a WVA Global Award in the Veterinary Education category.
A pillar of veterinary advancement in Kenya, Dr. Mbugua dedicated her career to elevating surgical education at the University of Nairobi’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Her decades-long teaching legacy is defined by an exceptional ability to simplify complex surgical procedures and empower students with both knowledge and confidence.
Dr. Mbugua’s academic journey began internationally, earning her master’s degree in veterinary science from Colorado State University in 1976, followed by a PhD in veterinary surgery in 1987 at the University of Nairobi. She went on to teach across disciplines, from orthopedics and neurology to radiology and soft tissue surgery, helping generations of veterinarians overcome some of the most daunting aspects of their training.
Her influence extends well beyond academia. Dr. Mbugua was a founding figure in Kenya’s companion animal veterinary sector, establishing the Kenya Small and Companion Animal Veterinary Association. Under her leadership, the association launched a Hip Dysplasia Score Scheme to support responsible breeding practices, setting new clinical benchmarks through collaboration with the East African Kennel Club.
Throughout her career, Dr. Mbugua was celebrated not just for her medical expertise but also for the humility, clarity, and compassion she brought to every student and initiative. The 2025 WVA award cements her legacy as a transformative educator and advocate for veterinary excellence in Kenya and around the globe.
