Ontario veterinary school nabs top marks

U of G’s OVC has placed fifth in a global ranking of veterinary schools

Budding Canadian professionals looking for the best veterinary education might not need to travel too far from home.

The University of Guelph’s (U of G’s) Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) has placed fifth on the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) 2020 World University Rankings.

Additionally, OVC nabbed the top spot in Canada and third in North America.

“This is a welcome and timely recognition of the highly productive community we have here at OVC,” says the college’s dean, Jeffrey Wichtel, B.VSc., PhD, ACT. “OVC’s fifth-place ranking reflects our world-class research and stellar academic programming in graduate, DVM, and veterinary specialist training, as well as the value these bring to employers, research partners, and the regional economy. We are seeing unprecedented demand for our graduates across in Canada and beyond.”

The QS ranking methodology focuses on academic reputation, research impact, and the desirability of graduates by employers, OVC says. The college has consistently been named a ‘top 10’ university since the rankings first introduced veterinary science in 2015.

After OVC, the University of Calgary (UCalgary) was the highest-ranked Canadian school in veterinary sciences, placing 42nd out of 50.
