The Atlantic Veterinary College (AVC) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is celebrating a significant professional milestone for one of its faculty. Dr. Kathleen MacMillan, a equine ambulatory veterinarian and Associate Professor, has been appointed president-elect of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA).

The announcement was made during the CVMA’s annual convention in Victoria, British Columbia, this July.

A graduate of AVC’s Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program in 2001, Dr. MacMillan also holds a master’s degree in equine exercise physiology and became a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in Equine Practice in 2013. Known for her dedication to equine sports medicine and veterinary education, she has inspired and guided numerous students toward careers in equine care through her work at AVC.

In her new role with the CVMA, Dr. MacMillan will contribute to shaping the association’s strategic vision, advocate on behalf of veterinary professionals nationwide, and represent Canada’s veterinary field on both domestic and international platforms. She is set to begin her term as president in July 2026, when the CVMA Convention convenes in Charlottetown.

The Canadian Veterinary Medical Association represents more than 7,000 veterinarians across the country and plays a central role in championing animal health, professional standards, and continued learning within the veterinary community.
