The National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) and Egg Farmers of Canada have launched a public comment period for proposed amendments to the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pullets and Laying Hens. The amendments focus on space requirements for round feeders, space allowance for pullets in aviaries, and the maximum number of tiers in barn facilities.
The comment period is open until May 26, 2025. Afterward, the Code Amendment Committee will review submissions before releasing the final Code in summer 2025.
“I am pleased to be part of this collaborative effort well focused on keeping the Code of Practice current and backed by science,” says Dr. Michelle Jendral, World Animal Protection Canada’s representative on the Code Committee. “This public consultation is an important opportunity for consumers, producers, veterinarians, and indeed all stakeholders to provide their input and contribute towards progressive and achievable advances in bird welfare.”
The amendments are part of NFACC’s process to ensure Codes of Practice remain aligned with the latest animal welfare science and best practices. Veterinarians, producers, and other stakeholders are encouraged to review the draft and submit feedback online[1].
