Alberta veterinarian recognized for commitment to feline care

[1]A Lethbridge, Alta., veterinarian has received national recognition for her work on improving the health and welfare of feline patients.

Kate Lupton, DVM, B.Sc., is the recipient of this year’s Canadian Veterinary Medical Association[2] (CVMA) Small Animal Practitioner Award.

“After reading Dr. Lupton’s numerous supporting letters in her nomination package, it was clear she has made a significant difference in the lives of Lethbridge’s cats and community,” says CVMA president Terri Chotowetz, DVM, BSA. “She is not only a pioneer in feline medicine, but an excellent leader and mentor to her colleagues, ensuring future success in the community of Lethbridge and the veterinary profession.”

Lupton’s passion for feline medicine dates back to her days as a student at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine[3] (WCVM), where she started a cat club that brought in several feline experts as speakers, and completed a summer research project looking at biomarkers to more easily differentiate between feline pancreatitis and pancreatic neoplasia. Upon her graduation in 2012, she received the American Association of Feline Practitioners[4] (AAFP) Student Award.

Lupton has been practicing in Lethbridge for more than six years. She developed a feline-only practice in the region, and in 2013, the clinic became the first in western Canada to achieve Gold Level accreditation through the global Cat Friendly Clinic[5] program.

In addition to contributing many articles on feline health for local publications, Lupton is the primary veterinarian for several cat rescue groups in the area, including The Last Chance Cat Ranch[6], Purrfect Endings, and the PAW Society[7]. In 2013, she hospitalized, treated, and discharged more than 30 injured cats after The Last Chance Cat Ranch experienced a fire that destroyed its main adoption house.

Dr. Lupton is a model example for all other veterinarians and is extremely deserving of this recognition.”
