Fleming College is introducing a new Veterinary Technician program to address a provincewide shortage of trained veterinary professionals.

The four-semester, accelerated diploma will immerse students in hands-on animal care from their first week through a partnership with the Peterborough Humane Society.

Interim president Dr. Theresa Knott said the program responds to strong labour‑market demand and significant student interest.

Delivered at a new animal care facility that includes a shelter and clinic, the program combines simulation-based learning, supervised clinical practice, and placements in clinics, hospitals, zoos, wildlife centres, and large‑animal settings.

Instruction will be led by veterinary medicine physicians and registered veterinary technicians, and the curriculum will integrate Indigenous perspectives throughout.

Fleming says the program will prepare graduates for licensing exams and future pathways in animal‑care education.
