New community veterinary program brings accessible pet care to Durham region

A new initiative is transforming how pets receive veterinary care in Durham Region. The Vets Around the Corner Community Veterinarian Program (CVP), launched last week, has already provided critical services to local animals while laying the groundwork for an innovative mobile outreach model.
In its first week, CVP partnered with municipalities, animal services, and public health agencies to host two clinics — in Uxbridge on August 23 and Oshawa on August 27. More than 100 pets received rabies vaccinations, 45 were microchipped for improved safety, and several received full exams, treatments, and medications at no cost. One unhoused resident and his elderly dog were among those who benefited directly from the program.
“Our goal from the beginning has been to work closely with healthcare providers, social service agencies, municipalities, and local partners to reduce barriers to veterinary care,” said William Woodstock, Board Chair of the CVP. “By relying on these trusted community partners to identify individuals in need, we can focus our eorts on those who require support the most, and deliver care in the way that works best for them.”
Looking ahead, CVP will debut Canada’s first mobile community veterinary outreach service. By collaborating with housing services, public health units, and community organizations, referrals will target families and individuals facing barriers to veterinary care. Unlike traditional clinics, this program will not accept self-referrals, ensuring resources are focused where they’re needed most.
Two additional community events are already planned: a reduced-cost rabies and microchipping clinic in Whitby on September 27, followed by an expanded clinic in Ajax on October 18 that will also include wellness exams and preventive treatments.
CVP, a federally registered nonprofit, provides veterinary services through mobile clinics, in-home visits, and outreach initiatives. The program focuses on improving access to care for pets and supporting families in Durham Region and surrounding areas.
