Olds College expands animal health programs

Olds College of Agriculture & Technology is making significant changes to its Animal Health programs, introducing more flexible learning options and expanded credentialing opportunities starting Sept. 2025.

Beginning next year, the Veterinary Technician Assistant (VTA), Veterinary Medical Receptionist (VMR), and Veterinary Technician (VT) Diploma programs will offer three intakes per year—fall, winter, and spring. This adjustment increases enrolment capacity and promotes collaboration among students across all three programs.

Changes to program pathways will also enhance student progression. Graduates of the four-month VTA program will be able to transition directly into the second term of the VMR program, allowing them to complete both credentials in two terms instead of three. Former VTA graduates may also be eligible for this streamlined pathway.

Additionally, VMR graduates will have the option to enter the workforce or apply to the VT diploma program through an alternate admission pathway. The VT diploma consists of four semesters on campus, followed by a six-week practicum.

Olds College has also established an articulation agreement with St. Matthew’s University in the Cayman Islands, creating a direct pathway for students interested in pursuing a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.

“These program enhancements reflect our commitment to providing students with flexible, high-quality education that aligns with industry needs,” says Amos Ngai, dean of the School of Life Science and Business. “By expanding intakes, streamlining pathways and strengthening career opportunities, we are equipping future animal health professionals with the skills and experience needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving field.”
