CVMA hires new mental health expert
The organization's first Director, Veterinary Wellness, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will play a key role in advancing the CVMA’s objectives

In a step towards prioritizing the mental health and overall well-being of veterinarians across the country, the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association (CVMA) has welcomed Kathy Keil, DVM, as its first director of veterinary wellness, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). With nearly three decades of experience under her belt, Keil will play a key role in advancing the CVMA’s objectives to support the veterinary profession in addressing mental health and wellness issues, while also contributing to DEI initiatives.
Keil’s background includes advanced studies in psychology and extensive involvement in mental health initiatives within veterinary circles. In her recent role as chair of the CVMA Wellness Advisory Group, Keil supported the launch of initiatives like The Working Mind and the CVMA-Merck Animal Health campaign “It’s Time to Talk about Mental Health in Vet Med.”
“I am genuinely committed to driving change in veterinary wellness and DEI to facilitate truly inclusive and psychologically healthy workplaces where all members of the profession feel a sense of belonging,” Keil says. “Every veterinary professional matters, and this work to support and steward wellness and DEI matters. I am eager to see this work improve well-being and help my colleagues have meaningful, sustainable, and inclusive careers.”
